The tensile strength of ductile iron casting far exceeds that of grey cast iron, which is comparable to steel. Therefore, for parts subjected to static load, the use of ductile iron saves material and is lighter than cast steel.
The ductile iron castings of different substrates have very different properties. Ductile iron has good fatigue strength. Experiments have shown that the torsional fatigue strength of ductile iron is even higher than 459 steel. In practice, most parts that are subjected to dynamic loads are perforated or with shoulders, so ductile iron is used instead of steel to make certain important parts such as crankshafts, connecting rods and camshafts.

After the pressure-loaded component of ductile iron casting is treated by the ferrite annealing cycle, the internal spherical structure can also eliminate the crack phenomenon easily generated by the flake graphite inside the cast iron. In the microphotograph of ductile iron, it can be seen that the cracks are terminated after the parade to the graphite ball. In the ductile iron industry, these graphite balls are known as "crack terminators" because of their ability to resist fracture.
